Individuals in Recovery Inspire Hope

The 30 in 30 project follows 30 individuals in recovery as they recall stories and lessons that inspire hope. Participants pull from their own experiences to provide information, resources, and support that have been most impactful in their recovery.

First, the facts:

  • Addiction remains a serious threat to public health and well-being. Overdose deaths exceeded 100,000 in the 12-month period ending in April 2021 — a 28 percent increase from the prior year.1
  • Excessive alcohol use is responsible for 95,000 deaths each year or 261 deaths per day.2
  • Additionally, it is estimated that only 11 percent of people who needed treatment in 2018, sought and received treatment.3

The Change Theory4 is one way we've come to understand substance use disorder. It states that people go through 5 predictable stages when trying to change their own behavior: Pre-contemplation; Contemplation; Decision; Action; and Maintenance.

We hope these real stories resonate with and inspire anyone contemplating recovery and remind New Yorkers living with addiction — OASAS is here for you every step of the way when you're ready to receive help.
