Trauma 101: Trauma and Trauma Informed Care

Overview

Trauma-informed care is an approach to engaging people with histories of trauma. It teaches participants how to recognize trauma symptoms in self and others, and acknowledges the role that trauma has played in peoples' lives. This training is designed as a practical overview and will cover a basic understanding of what is trauma/ adversity, how it is experienced, and the connection of trauma to substance use.

The objectives are:

  • Define different types of trauma
  • Explain the findings of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study
  • Understand how trauma/ adversity impacts individuals
  • Discuss the relationship between trauma and substance use
  • Identify symptoms of trauma that may indicate a trauma history via case study

Credentialing Credit

Six (6) OASAS clock hours are approved to be applied to the OASAS credentials: Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC Renewal only), Credentialed Prevention Professional and Credentialed Prevention Specialist (CPP/CPS Initial Section 1, and Renewal). Social Work CEU's are approved for six (6) hours.

Who Should Attend: Addiction Treatment Professionals/Prevention Professionals, Mental Health Professionals and Recovery Professionals.

How to Apply: There is a new application procedure using the NYS OASAS Test Portal (similar to Learning Thursdays). Click here and follow directions to log in, or to create an account and register by January 18, 2022. Applicants will be notified by the lead trainer, if accepted.
