Peer Specialist of the Year

Anthony Kohl's journey from addiction to becoming Peer Specialist of the Year highlights the power of recovery and peer support in addiction services.

Growing up in Washington Heights, Anthony was exposed to substance use early on. Despite his high school football and military service, his recreational drug use gradually consumed his life. He recalls working two jobs to fund his addiction while balancing family responsibilities. After several incarcerations and missing his son's graduation, he realized, "I can't live like this anymore."

Now a Senior Peer Coordinator at VIP Services in the Bronx and involved in the Bronx Heroin Overdose Prevention Education program, Anthony helps people at the same precinct where he was once arrested.
