Services

Individuals with problem gambling or gambling disorder respond well to evidenced-based cognitive behavioral therapy that focuses specifically on cognitions that fuel gambling behavior. In addition, treatment can involve building on skills to manage personal and environmental trigger, such as an advertisement or a memory. 

Individuals may use a variety of pathways to connect with the statewide gambling treatment network. New Yorkers have access to outpatient and inpatient gambling treatment services from OASAS-certified Outpatient and Inpatient Programs which include Addiction Treatment Centers, and approved Private Practitioners. Problem Gambling Resource Centers and/or Recovery Center may provide referrals to both certified programs and private practitioners in your area. The HOPEline will direct you to a Problem Gambling Center near you. All three - Problem Gambling Resource Centers, Recovery Centers and the 24/7 HOPEline - provide community education, information, and support.

    Referrals to Care

    Hopeline

    Call the 24/7 HOPEline at 1-877-8-HOPENY or Text HOPENY (467369) for information and a referral to a your regional Problem Gambling Resource Center. Representatives can answer questions, provide gambling treatment service information and referrals, and offer a warm hand-off to your nearest Problem Gambling Resource Centers. 
     

    Problem Gambling Resource Centers 

    The HOPEline will refer you to your regional Problem Gambling Resource Center. You can also contact a Center directly for a referral to treatment services (state-certified or private) in your area. Problem Gambling Resource Centers. You may also contact your nearest Problem Gambling Resource Center (PCRCs) directly for referral to gambling treatment and support. Operated by the New York Council on Problem Gambling, the seven regional hubs provide local community education about—and referrals to treatment services (state-certified or approved private practitioners). Private practitioners are trained and approved to receive referrals. OASAS funds PGRC via the NYS Council on Problem Gambling.

     

    Recovery Centers  

    Contact a Recovery Center for a referral to treatment services (state-certified or approved private practitioner) in your area. Centers also provide a community-based, non-clinical health and wellness support in a safe setting. The centers promote long-term recovery through skill-building, recreation, employment readiness and the opportunity to connect with peers who are going through similar challenges.

    What's included in this directory?
    • A statewide network of certified providers includes nearly 40 outpatient programs with a specific gambling designation pursuant to Title 14 NYCRR part 857. 

    • All 12 state-operated OASAS Addiction Treatment Centers (ATC) can admit and treat for problem gambling services. Outpatient and inpatient services are available.
    What's not included in this directory?
    • Private practitioners are overseen by the NY Council on program gambling and are not included in the directory at this time. Contact your local Problem Gambling Resource Center for a referral to an approved private practitioners. Approved practitioners receive specialized training and approval from OASAS to receive referrals from Problem Gambling Resource Centers (PGRC).  

    Medicaid

    Effective January 1, 2023, New York State (NYS) Medicaid fee-for-service (FFS) and Medicaid Managed Care (MMC) Plans will begin covering Gambling Disorder treatment provided to individuals admitted for and receiving gambling only services from those Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) certified outpatient, inpatient and Part 820 stabilization and or rehabilitation programs that are have the OASAS Gambling Designation.

     

    NY Council on Problem Gambling

    Today, New York Council on Problem Gambling is funded by OASAS and works with stakeholders and localities to:

    • Produce and disseminate pubic awareness information about the prevention and treatment of problem gambling.
    • Conduct and publicly support research activities to establish and document areas of need.
    • Provide training tools to healthcare and other professionals for the purpose of assessing and treating persons with gambling-related problems.
    • Foster expanded and improved services for residents adversely affected by gambling.
    • Assist industry and business leaders in developing customer- and employee-based problem gambling awareness programs.
    • Conduct workshops and conferences.

    NYCPG strives to meet the ongoing and evolving need to address problem gambling in NYS as gambling and the associated problems continue to expand in various forms throughout the state.
