Substance Use and Addiction in School Age Children

Adolescence is a critical time for brain development. Alcohol and drug use and gambling early in life can cause irreversible brain damage and sometimes lead to addiction later in life. Resources for educators and administrators, school nurses counselors and other school staff can address drug, alcohol, gambling and e-cig use in school settings. New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports and the New York State Education Department have partnered to provide this information to increase prevention and treatment education for school-age children using conversation aids, youth-centered programming and family support services.
