When providing services to a specific population such as veterans, it is essential to understand the culture and capitalize on elements creating positive outcomes. The Col. C. David Merkel Veteran Residence has learned how to create a safe, conducive environment for veterans suffering from SUD and other co-occurring issues in order to find purpose and prepare for reintegration back into their communities and families. Using the elements of T.R.U.C.E. in addition to heightened cultural sensitivity allows a treatment provider to create a model of programming that highlights strengths and resiliency traits in specific populations, resulting in successful treatment episodes and sustained recovery.
